Demeter (Ceres), The Goddess of the Harvest

|
This is a very detailed, finely carved protrait of a woman with wheat stalks and ribbons in her beautiful curly hair. The wheat stalks are symbols of the Demeter (Ceres) Goddess of the Harvest, and given the number and fullness of the stalks it was a bountiful harvest season. The woman has a wonderful face with a long straight nose indicative of older cameos. The cameo is marked on the back with the initals "NL" in the middle and the number "6" at the bottom. The cameo is set in a broad width gold frame with a single pearl at the top. The piece measures 1 and 15/16 inches (49 mm) wide by 2 and 5/16 inches (59 mm) in height. This piece is currently not priced for sale; however, offers are always welcomed. |
