Artemis (Diana) - Goddess of the Hunt

This is a fine example of a deeply carved, but reverse carved, shell cameo. Reversed carved is when the shell is carved so that the white is in the back ground and the orange and darker shades are in the forground. This carving is of Artemis (Diana), Goddess of the Hunt. She is symbolized by the crescent moon shown on her head. This cameo also shows arrows on her back and a field of stars above. The cameo is beautiful prong set in a gold frame with an elaborate safety chain and pin. The piece measures 1 and 3/4 inches (46 mm) wide by 2 and 1/16 inches (53 mm) in height.
