Hebe Feeding Zeus's Eagle

Hebe Feeding Zeus's Eagle

"Hebe, the most beautiful of the goddesses, walks forever in Olympus beside her mother Hera, goddess of marriage" [Pindar, Nemean 10.15]

Hebe, also known as Ganymeda, is Youth. Daughter to Zeus and Hera, she is the cup-bearer in Heaven and pours the nectar to the gods when they are assembled. In mythology she is also known to have performed other tasks, such as helping to prepare Hera's chariot, or bathing Ares after a battle. This is a detailed and deeply carved shell cameo of Hebe feeding the Eagle of Zeus. The cameo shows the clouds beneath them and the bowl Hebe feeds the eagle from, as well as the birds feathers, the braids and twists in Hebe's hair and every drape of her clothing. The cameo captivates you with its beauty and intricacies. The cameo is mounted in a white gold brooch setting with a bead design. The piece measures 1 and 7/8 inches (48 mm) wide by 2 and 7/8 inches (60 mm) in height. The brooch has an old-style c-clasp with a safety catch.

This piece is currently not priced for sale; however, offers are always welcomed.
