Athena and Others in the Clouds
Shell Cameo with Sheild Setting

This is a beautifully carved shell cameo depicting Athena, the Goddess of War and Wisdow, in the clouds with another goddess. Athena can be easily identified with her helmet, shield and spear. The other woman is harder to identify with no distinguishing marks except her beauty (could be Helen of Troy). Beneath the two women is winged cupid with an arrow in one hand and a torch in the other. The cameo is set in a wonderfully large gold frame designed like a shield. The cameo measures 1 and 3/8 inches by 1 and 3/4 inches. The piece with the frame is 2 and 1/4 inches wide. The clasp is an old style c-clasp.
